A Ridiculous Rapid Response

Read Slate’s complete coverage of the tragedy in Norway.

Firefighters work at the site of an explosion near government buildings in Norway’s capital Oslo on July 22, 2011

Having had 16 years to reflect since Oklahoma City, we should really have become a little more refined in our rapid-response diagnoses of anti-civilian mass murder. Rather than make it more difficult BCBG Dresses sale, the number of contrasting features in the most recent case of Norway actually makes this task fractionally easier. The fruit bat and troll population of the recent scenery of catastrophe, enriched with Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell characters, permits a wider view of the various fields of fire and a greater variety of arguable motives for analysis.

Here is a secular Scandinavian social democracy, which is currently contributing forces to Western military efforts in Afghanistan and Libya. This consideration was what originally led some more orthodox conservatives to descry a “link.” (Even though, for example, it is unclear whether the jihadist groups in Norway identify with Muammar Qaddafi or his recent calls for suicide efforts against NATO.) Moreover Buy Karen Millen Dresses, the lethal attacks were launched against the youth movement of Norway’s ruling party Discount Bandage dresses, that stout bulwark of multi-culti good feelings and outreach to Muslim immigrants. This might not have been the first objective of a terror faction striving to take Norway off the military chessboard.

Then again, the prime suspect in the pogrom, Anders Behring Breivik, seems to come complete with a Jared Loughner reading list of his own, as well as a background in white power Nordic enthusiasm. I was touched to see that a flirtation of his with Freemasonry was counted as “right wing” in some quarters. In the old days Buy Marc Jacobs Dresses, Catholic fascism hated Masons almost as much as it did Jews. (Chilean President Salvador Allende was a Freemason, for example, in a tradition of leftist anti-clericalism that I am sad to see dying out.) And finally—though in this wilderness of mirrors it probably isn’t finally—Breivik has apparently declared himself a passionate pro-Zionist as well as a sworn foe of all sorts of Islamization. More attention should be paid to that last aspect: The true “neo-Nazi” gangs in Europe have violent anti-Semitism in common with their ostensibly deadliest Islamist foes, whereas anti-immigrant populists of the Geert Wilders stripe in Holland seek respectability by standing up for Israel, very often against criticism from the multi-culti left.

The misreading of these and similar indicators has led to more intellectual chaos than the anti-Islamic witch hunt that followed Oklahoma City. The ruling Spanish conservatives, making the opposite mistake, falsely accused a home-grown Iberian gangster group of committing one of the most politically and militarily lethal actions of jihad on European soil: an “operation” that affected the outcome of a general election in a NATO state and also gravely damaged the coalition in Iraq. That week probably marked the high point of Bin Laden’s coordination of a serious terror nexus in Europe.

One way of phrasing the question is this: Do the extreme jihadists and their most virulent opponents really have a symbiotic relationship? In tapes and sermons from mosques in London and Hamburg, you may find whole manifestos about the need to keep women as chattel Buy Herve leger strapless, to eradicate the disease of homosexuality, to thwart the Jewish design over international finance, and other fantasies of the Third Reich mentality. Pushed to its logical or pathological conclusion, this would involve something that Europeans and Americans have never seen before: a conflict between different forms of fascism in order to see which assault on multi-ethnic democracy was the most effective.

There were signs of this mentality at work in the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, when Jerry Falwell Discount DKNY Dresses, Pat Robertson, and other demagogues saw Osama Bin Laden being used to trace the finger of God. And some of the descendant fans of Timothy McVeigh, through the medium of “9/11 Truth” and other arcana, have also tried to confect an overarching theory of illegitimate global power as it was exposed and challenged on that day. Again, though, one notices that the CIA and Mossad drew the plush assignment of actually choosing and rigging the target and organizing collusion and coordination, while leaving lesser rank-and-filers of al-Qaida to perform the lowly tasks of detonation. This sad, self-hating world view dissolves in freeze frame in the Abbottabad villa, with the chief guest wistfully flicking the channel changer and musing on the dear dead days when he was “the strong horse.”

It also culminates in the wretched spectacle of the jihadist websites in Oslo, which had been getting ready with their original posts of joy when they, too, thought that their own holy cause might be involved—and then ceasing and desisting when it became clear that the perpetrator was some loser who had quite different reasons for wanting to slaughter a crowd of young people that day. Headline writers and newscasters should have waited before making any pronouncements, and thereby committing the indecency of suggesting that the killers were being selective, even choosy. So-called “experts” should have been ashamed to reverse-engineer the motive from the modus operandi, rather as Steve Emerson had done in Oklahoma by stating that the maximization of violence was “a Middle Eastern trait.” A pale Christian rider from ultima Thule with a private view of the Book of Revelation may also be said to be infected with “Middle Eastern traits” of the sort that hell has not hitherto boasted.

Meanwhile, the streets and squares of Syria and the committees of the Libyan civic opposition fill up with eager and anxious people who want to know if they have been naive to place their bets—in some cases to wager their lives—on democratic transition, peaceful tactics, the transparent allocation of previously stolen funds for long-overdue reconstruction, and the removal of a parasitic military and police caste. Having long entreated Middle Easterners to phrase their demands in this way, we then go all hesitant when they agree to do so. This last month of Western and U.N. dithering has been one of the most unprincipled interludes of recent history, with even one ambassadorial overnight stay in the city of Hama apparently regarded as a red badge of courage on our part. If it turns out to be the best we could do, then the condemnation must be fierce.

Ford not interested in selling Volvo

Buy Hale Bob Dresses

It’s just plain difficult to follow Ford Motor Company lately, as there seems to be more rumors about the embattled American icon than any other automaker. On any given day, all DKNY Clothing sale, some, or none of the Premiere Automotive Group could be for sale, and everyone from Renault to Hyundai, even the Russians, could be the most interested suitors.

In the past couple weeks, a sale of Jaguar and Land Rover has appeared more and more likely Discount DKNY Clothing, as Ford has hired KPMG to assist in a possible sale. In a recent interview with the Free Press, however Discount DKNY Dresses, Way Forward architect and Ford President of the Americas, Mark Fields, claims that Volvo definitely isn’t on the block. The product portfolios of the Ford brand and Volvo are far too intertwined at this point Cheap Hale Bob Dresses, especially in Europe, for a split to pan out in the Blue Oval’s favor. Ford will likely combine the R&D between the two brands further in North America Replica BCBG Dresses, where Ford is working to bring down costs.

For our money, it makes sense to keep Volvo in the fold, if only because the Swedish automaker represents one of the few outright success stories in the Ford portfolio.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy

With only five days left until Election Day, John McCain’s campaign aides seem happier than they have been in a while. For the last few days, the campaign has been increasingly buoyed by what it says has been improvement in its internal polling of 14 battleground states. Aides see a tightening race in states that are crucial to their long-shot march to 270 votes and victory. Even McCain himself is upbeat. “He’s been happy for the last few days,” says one aide. “That’s a change.”

What are we to make of this? Where do we plot the mindset of the McCain campaign on a continuum that stretches from deceit (aides know they’re losing badly and they’re play-acting) to Drudge-like self-delusion (they’re mindlessly clutching at, and believing in, any glimmer of positive news) to truth (there actually are real signs of hope)? The line can be hard to define, but it seems to me that the McCain campaign is somewhere between self-delusion and truth.

John McCain and Barack Obama

There are a lot of reasons for campaign aides to be engaging in self-delusion. The press is full of stories about how badly it has been run. Peddling the idea that things are working well enough to close the gap in polling helps buck up the campaign. Plus, after two years of campaigning, no one wants to be forced to go through the motions just for the sake of appearance, so if they believe they’re making progress (regardless of whether they are), it’s easier to get out of bed in the morning.

Still, the landscape looks pretty bleak. A flood of public polls show that McCain is down in several important, traditionally Republican states. The news organizations and analysts that have reported and sifted the numbers guess that, at the moment, Obama would garner upward of 310 electoral votes by winning not only all the states John Kerry won but also Ohio, Virginia, and several other states that went for Bush in 2004.

In McCain’s most optimistic scenario, he loses a few Republican states like New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, and Iowa. He just has to hope that he doesn’t lose too many of them. (Losing a biggie like Florida or Ohio would be curtains.) He could make up for a small loss of GOP states with a victory in Pennsylvania or New Hampshire.

How do McCain aides get around this dire picture without the aid of strong drink? Let’s just say that McCain’s campaign now relies on hope more than Obama’s does. They hope that the Obama organization isn’t as impressive as signs suggest it is. They hope that the greater enthusiasm apparent among Democrats turns out to be less than advertised on Election Day. They hope that the public polls that show a big Obama lead are poorly designed Buy DKNY Clothing, overstating participation by young voters and African-Americans. They hope undecided voters will all break to McCain in the end.

The McCain path to victory relies heavily on the campaign’s pollster Cheap White Herve leger, Bill McInturff, who is conducting surveys in battleground states every day. For the entire campaign, McCain aides say, McInturff has often been a bit of a wet blanket. Whenever they’ve felt good, he’s been the voice of caution Discount White Herve leger, explaining that the landscape was bleaker than they thought. Recently, though, his internal campaign updates have actually been eagerly anticipated: The subject line of a recent one said “a memo you will want to read.”

Could McInturff be blowing pretty rings of imaginary smoke? Perhaps. But he has a good reputation for honesty among pollsters. It’s also not in his professional interest to play Pollyanna. Who wants to be known as the Baghdad Bob of pollsters White Herve leger sale, making crazy claims that turn out to be untrue? Plus, his ability to get future clients depends on his integrity.

McInturff released a memo yesterday that outlined his case for why it’s still possible for McCain to pull a rabbit out of his hat. Here’s what he sees: His poll of battleground states shows Obama with such a small lead, it’s within the margin of error, which means it’s effectively tied. In Iowa, he sees the race tightening to within a few points. In Pennsylvania, it’s in single digits (though that could mean nine). (The average of other pollsters say McCain is down by a dozen in Iowa and Pennsylvania.) Moving toward McCain, say his aides Discount Chanel Dresses, are women making less than $60,000 and white men with only some college education.

Of course, when it’s in your interest for things to look positive Christian Audigier Clothing sale, you tend to see them positively. When any campaign talks about “internal polls,” be wary. They can be manipulated for spin reasons—allowing them to present pseudoscientific numbers to make a political point—or they can just be wrong. Their formula for turnout may be as faulty as those calculations that valued mortgage-backed securities. McCain’s pollsters think they’ve taken the “Obama effect” into account—the number of new voters and lapsed voters who will actually participate—but what if they’ve wildly undercounted?

Alter Bathes Obama in Heavenly Light!

Barack Obama

Is Barack Obama the Risen and the True Vine? To answer this question, Slate has periodically gathered gratuitously adoring material from coverage of the Nobel Peace Prize-winner, best-selling author, Harvard Law Review president, Men’s Vogue cover model, two-time Grammy winner, efficient note-taker, physics wunderkind, descendant of George Washington’s great-great-great-great-great-grandfather Replica Breitling Watches, teenage jazz enthusiast, possible telepathic communicator with space aliens from distant galaxies, surpasser of all civil rights gains since 1957, calmer of turbulent Iowans, bearer of photographic halos, occasion for reportorial clairvoyance, and (not least) president of the United States. Our latest entry is from The Promise, my friend Jonathan Alter’s newly published account of Obama’s first year in the White House. The book is packed with wonderful Woodward-esque insider tidbits (The Big Money published a piquant excerpt about how Larry Summers froze out Paul Volcker) and renders some impressively tough judgments about Obama. (For example, Alter faults the president for failing to bring into government many people with extensive experience in business.) You should read it!

But The Promise also contains the following OMW-bait passage, on Page 102:

Rabbi David Saperstein Replica Glashutte Watches sale, reading from Psalms in English and Hebrew, noticed from the altar that the good men and women of the congregation that day, including the Bidens and other dignitaries, had not yet stood. Finally Bishop Vashti McKenzie of the African Methodist Church asked that everyone rise. At that moment Saperstein saw something from his angle of vision: “If I had seen it in a movie I would have groaned and said, ‘Give me a break. That’s so trite.’” A beam of morning light shown [sic] through the stained-glass windows and illuminated the president-elect’s face. Several of the clergy and choir on the altar who also saw it marveled afterward about the presence of the Divine.

That last sentence Replica Patek Philippe Watches, with its bizarrely unmodified noun “presence,” calls to mind Calvin Trillin’s recollection (recycled in his hilarious novel Floater) that as a young writer at Time, he once tried “to escape an overlong stay in the Religion section by writing ‘alleged’ in front of any historically questionable religious event.”

Ferrari kicks off young driver development program

Replica Alain Silberstein Watches

In the ever-increasingly competitive world of F1 racing Best place to buy Replica Parmigiani Fleurier Watches, many teams have begun scouting for drivers earlier and earlier in their careers. In the past, smaller teams would scout the talent Discount Replica Seiko Watches, and then the bigger teams would poach them with their vast resources. But in the wake of the immense success of McLaren’s rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton Replica Dewitt Watches, nobody can afford to rest on their proverbial laurels. Now, following existing programs at rival teams Renault, Honda, Toyota and McLaren, Ferrari is launching a young driver development program of its own.

The initial news came in last week from team principal Stefano Domenicali Replica Zenith Watches, and has now been substantiated by a new joint announcement from Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo in conjunction with Gino Macaluso Replica Tonino Lamborghini Watches, head of Italian racing federation ACI-CSAI. The Scuderia will offer test drives to Mirko Bortollotti, Edoardo Piscopo and Salvatore Cicatelli – the top three finishers in this year’s Italian Formula 3 championship. If Ferrari decides to contract any of the drivers for a future race seat, they would be the first Italian driver for the Scuderia since the colorful Ivan Capelli (who, incidentally, won the Italian F3 title in 1983) raced the crimson cars way back in 1992. Now excuse us while we go sign up for next year’s Italian F3 season.

Disrupt Iran’s Oil Trade, Aid the Green Movement

Supporters of Iran pro-democracy movement

Conventional wisdom has it that imposing harsher energy sanctions on the Iranian regime will have little effect on President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the entity largely responsible for Iran’s illicit nuclear program and for the brutal crackdown on Iran’s pro-democracy green movement last June.

Yet European political elites, as well as energy and engineering companies, are callously—and conveniently—ignoring divestment pleas from those Iranian democracy advocates. A growing number of key opinion-makers and activists in the green movement support biting sanctions on the Iranian energy sector. They believe sanctions would strengthen Iran’s struggling democratic movement and exert greater pressure on the Iranian regime’s unlawful nuclear-enrichment program.

While prominent green leaders like Mir Hossein Mousavi have publicly opposed sanctions for what appear to be tactical reasons—to allow them to condemn the regime for the decisions that led to sanctions—other Iranian dissidents and activists now welcome robust penalties against the energy sector.

Mohsen Makhmalbaf Discount Replica Breitling Watches, a distinguished Iranian film director who serves as a sort of spokesman for the green movement Replica Tonino Lamborghini Watches, neatly captured the urgent need to increase global economic pressure on Iran. “The revolutionary guards are terrorists. They are in Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon. They tortured people in Iran. They rape people in prisons. If you explain to the Iranian people that you are sanctioning their enemies, they will support you Replica Casio Watches,” he told the Guardian.

Makhmalbaf is not a voice in the wilderness. Iranian experts and analysts confirm that, in private conversations, green movement activists implore the international community to take greater pains to influence the regime’s behavior. In view of the potential consequences, these activists are understandably reticent—they know the regime would blame them for any additional sanctions.

(The green movement may also have a decision-making mechanism that requires key decisions to be made unanimously, to preserve unity in the face of overwhelming pressure from the regime. Sanctions are not without controversy, so it is not surprising that there are internal disagreements on their utility.)

Yet, such a debate over the legitimacy and efficacy of sanctions is not without precedent. In the 1980s, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other activists initially opposed sanctions against the apartheid regime for fear that they would harm black South Africans. They reversed their position when they saw that sanctions would marginalize and undermine the government that was oppressing them.

The Iranian regime is now ripe for a similar sort of campaign, having reached a point where the harder it cracks down on democratic activists, the less support it enjoys, even among conservative elites. In May, the mullahs led a wave of imprisonments and executions of labor union activists and dissidents, killing Farzad Kamangar, a 35-year-old teacher and member of the Teachers’ Trade Association of Kurdistan, for the transgression of “enmity against God.” The crackdown has increased support for the pro-democracy movement.

The clerics’ bloody suppression of widespread demonstrations in the wake of the fraudulent June 2009 presidential election has created the preconditions for a transformation of Iranian life, encouraging steely resolve among disenfranchised groups from labor unionists to Iranian women, who are increasingly rejecting the regime’s efforts to police their appearance. The Iranian regime has less political legitimacy than ever. What else can Western politicians and corporations do to advance the cause of democracy in Iran?

One answer is to deny the regime the resources it needs to run the massive energy sector that provides the regime with its lifeblood.

Iran is an energy superpower. It is the world’s fourth-largest producer of crude oil. Oil-export revenues constitute more than 24 percent of Iran’s gross domestic product, according to Government Accountability Office estimates Dolce & Gabbana Replica Watches, and provide between 50 percent and 76 percent of government revenues. Iran’s natural gas reserves Zenith Replica Watches, some 981 trillion cubic feet, are the world’s second-largest after Russia’s. The country already enjoys substantial international leverage thanks to oil. Once it becomes a major exporter of natural gas, it will have exponentially more wealth and power.

Yet one of Iran’s most serious vulnerabilities is its dependence on foreign energy sources. As a result of its limited refining capabilities—a consequence of U.S. sanctions—the Islamic republic must import approximately 30 percent of its annual domestic oil consumption from foreign suppliers. For the United States and its allies Buy Cheap Replica Corum Watches, this heavy dependence represents a significant opportunity to ratchet up the pressure on the regime.

U.S. efforts to ban foreign energy investment in Iran began with the passage of the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act of 1996, which authorized sanctions against foreign firms that invest more than $20 million in Iran’s energy sector in any single year. To date, however, no U.S. president has sanctioned even one of the scores of companies that are in violation of the legislation for fear of provoking an anti-American backlash from countries like China, Russia, Germany, France, Austria, India, Japan, or South Korea, which are major players in the Iranian oil and gas sector.

Obama Creates Health Care Piggy Bank

Everybody leads with President Obama’s decision to put some money in a piggy bank. In the budget proposal that will be released today, Obama will announce that he wants to start his promised overhaul of America’s health care system by creating a $634 billion reserve fund over the next 10 years that will be paid for by increasing taxes on the wealthy and cutting government spending. At the center of the plan is a call to gradually reduce the value of itemized deductions that those in the highest tax brackets can take for things like mortgage interest and charitable contributions. Separately, Obama will also propose to extend his tax cuts for most Americans and pay for them with the revenue he would get from polluting industries. These two proposals, combined with Obama’s stated goal of rolling back some of the Bush administration’s tax cuts, add up to “a pronounced move to redistribute wealth by reimposing a larger share of the tax burden on corporations and the most affluent taxpayers,” declares the New York Times.

USA Todaycalls the $634 billion reserve fund “a big step toward extending health coverage to 46 million uninsured and subsidizing premiums for others who have insurance.” But the administration made it clear it was just the first step, and most papers cite an administration official who characterized it as a “very substantial down payment” on Obama’s health care goal. The plan contains few details on how the money would be used. “Rather, the president’s proposal to raise revenue is intended to signal his seriousness about moving the talks forward on Capitol Hill Replica Tissot Watches for Cheap,” notes the Los Angeles Times. The Washington Post points out that this “strategy is largely intended to avoid the mistakes of the Clinton administration, which crafted an extensive proposal in secret for many months before delivering the finished product to lawmakers Discount Replica Oris Watches, who quickly rejected it.” The proposal to raise taxes is expected to create a huge ruckus in Congress, and one of the key questions will be “whether a change to the deductions formula would discourage charitable giving among the wealthy,” says the Wall Street Journal.

The proposal to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans involves reducing the value of tax deductions by about 20 percent for families making more than $250,000 a year or thereabouts. For those of us who aren’t used to getting big deductions, the NYT does the best job of explaining the logic behind it and what it means. The way the tax law is written, those in a higher tax bracket get a bigger deduction in their tax liability. So, for example, someone in the 35 percent bracket gets a bigger reduction for having $10,000 in itemized deductions than someone who is in the 28 percent bracket, which the White House says is unfair. Republicans obviously oppose this move, saying that it would hit many small businesses.

The change in itemized deductions would provide about half of the money for the reserve fund. Where’s the rest coming from? The biggest chunk would come from a proposal to cut payments the government makes to insurance companies that provide care for those in Medicare under what is known as Medicare Advantage. Obama also wants to cut costs by reducing the amount that Medicare pays hospitals with high re-admission rates, a move that is part of a broad plan to improve care. In addition, wealthier Medicare beneficiaries would be asked to pay more to receive the program’s prescription-drug coverage.

In the 10-year budget Obama will release tomorrow, he will also note that he wants to pay to extend the tax cuts for low and middle-income Americans with some of the billions the government will get from the “cap and trade” program that has been a centerpiece of the president’s platform. The program would basically require companies to buy permits if they want to exceed limits on pollution emissions. “Cap-and-trade is code for increasing taxes and killing American jobs,” said House Republican Leader John Boehner Breitling Replica Watches, “and that’s the last thing we need to do during these troubled economic times.” The program wouldn’t be instituted until 2012, at which point the administration expects the recession to be over.

The WP is all over Obama’s budget and dedicates three separate front-page stories to the issue. In one blunt piece, the WP declares that the president’s budget not only assumes that lawmakers can resolve some issues that have been plaguing them for years but also “relies on a few well-worn budget tricks.” In his big speech before Congress, Obama said his administration “already identified $2 trillion in savings,” but the truth is that about half of those are really tax increases. And much of the rest “comes from measuring Obama’s plans against an unrealistic scenario in which the Iraq war continues to suck up $170 billion a year forever,” details the Post. Although everyone says that Obama has successfully eschewed some common budget tricks that previous administrations were fond of, the plan isn’t quite free of what the paper calls “budgetary maneuvers.”

Considering the numbers he’s starting out with, many are saying that Obama’s goal of halving the deficit by the end of his first term isn’t very ambitious. The Congressional Budget Office recently said the deficit could be cut in half by 2013 simply by winding down the Iraq war and allowing some tax cuts to expire. Not everyone agrees. In an analysis piece inside Buy Cheap Replica Seiko Watches, the LAT says that halving the deficit won’t be an easy task and may end up costing Obama dearly. Some of the methods Obama said he will use to follow through “have fallen short in the past” and, perhaps more importantly, “Congress is not ready to mend its free-spending ways.” The huge spending bill that the House passed yesterday increases expenditures by 8 percent and is full of earmarks from both sides of the aisle.

What is undoubtedly ambitious is Obama’s agenda, which “amounts to a long work order for a legislature that has seen its productivity sag in recent years,” notes the Post. The young president is basically asking Congress to pass one huge piece of legislation about once a month. Many Democrats are getting nervous that the huge expectations Obama is creating could result in a big defeat in the 2010 midterm elections if it turns out they can’t follow through.

At least Democrats can take heart that one of the GOP’s rising stars has lost some of his shine. Both the NYT and LAT go inside with the searing criticism that was heaped on Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal for his response to Obama’s speech Replica Jaeger LeCoultre Watches, much of it from members of his own party. Many said the 37-year-old governor, who is seen as a possible presidential contender in 2012, failed in both message and delivery. Still, many caution against writing him off just because of one speech. “It was a disaster,” said Paul Begala, a former aide to President Bill Clinton, “but you can come back from disaster.”

The LAT fronts, and everyone covers, a new study that concluded it doesn’t matter what diet people choose to follow as long as they cut calories. In the largest study of its kind, researchers tested several popular weight-loss methods for two years and found that all the participants lost and regained the same amount of weight. The study’s authors say it shows that people should choose whichever diet they can stick to the longest. “There isn’t any one way A Lange & Sohne Replica Watches,” one expert said. “That is the nice thing about none of these diets in particular winning.”
